US authorities announced on Monday the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s wife, at the Washington International Airport, on suspicion of belonging to a drug trafficking network. Emma Coronel Aesboro, 31, who has dual Mexican and US citizenship, will appear before a federal judge on Tuesday. “El Chapo”, co-founder of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, was considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. In July 2019, a federal court in Brooklyn sentenced him to life in prison for smuggling at least 1,200 tons of cocaine into the United States in 25 years. Since the verdict was delivered, El Chapo has been transferred to a maximum protection prison in Colorado. Emma Coronel Isboro, a former beauty queen, is accused of being a member of a gang smuggling drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine into the United States. According to the document that details the prosecutions against her, she is also accused of participating in the complex operation that allowed her husband, 32 years her senior, to escape from a Mexican prison in July 2015 through a half-kilometer tunnel. Her lawyer, Geoffrey Lichtman, told AFP that Emma Coronel Esboro intends to plead her innocence.
