Paris – The Iranian regime is placing an additional set of obstacles for the administration of US President Joe Biden, which is considering a return to the controversial nuclear deal, from which the United States withdrew in 2018.
New data from the International Atomic Energy Agency that Tehran began producing metallic uranium, allowing its use in the manufacture of nuclear weapons cores, indicates that it “undermines” diplomatic efforts to resume the nuclear deal.
Major European countries (Britain, France and Germany) said in a joint statement on Friday: “By increasing its non-compliance, Iran undermines the opportunity to return to diplomacy to fully achieve the objectives of the JCPOA.”
Tehran is following a policy of defiance of the new US administration by raising the level of uranium enrichment to a higher level, and the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Tehran began producing metallic uranium, explaining that it had “verified” on 8 of February there were “3.6 grams of metallic uranium in the Isfahan facility.” Country.
With this challenge, Iran risks losing an opportunity to initiate diplomatic efforts to fully implement the 2015 agreement regarding its nuclear program, after it began producing uranium metal in the latest violation of the agreement.
The signatories of the 2015 agreement, along with Russia, China and the United States who left it unilaterally in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump, added: “Iran commits under the agreement not to produce metallic uranium and not to conduct research and development in the country. uranium mining field for 15 years. “
In his statement, he said: “We reiterate that these activities, which constitute an essential step in the development of a nuclear weapon, lack any reliable civil justification in Iran,” and at the same time called for “an end without delay and refrain from any another violation of its nuclear obligations. “
This new violation negatively affects the nuclear deal, which has been threatened with collapse since the United States withdrew from it, and the reimposition of economic sanctions on Tehran.
Iran had responded to the US move by gradually abandoning several of its obligations. This is justified by the fact that article 36 of the agreement allows any party to withdraw from its obligations in case it finds that the other parties do not respect its obligations.
Biden’s assumption of power in Washington raised hopes that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) could be reactivated on Tehran’s nuclear program. However, Tehran and Washington are asking each other to take the first step to resume a serious dialogue, as Iran insisted that the United States soften sanctions before resuming compliance with the agreement, Washington wants the opposite.
