Amnesty International, France, considered that the arrests carried out on 12 December in the capital, Paris, during the protests against the controversial comprehensive security bill, were “arbitrary”.
In a study carried out by the French branch of the human rights organization, Amnesty International revealed that “out of 142 detainees, 124 were taken into custody pending investigation, while 80% of them were ultimately not charged.”
The organization, which joined a wide range of organizations opposing the French security bill, expressed “legitimate concerns” about the possibility of “arbitrary arrests and other human rights violations.”
Anne-Sophie Simpere, an Amnesty International affiliate who co-wrote the study report, noted that the December 12 protest march in central Paris had not witnessed “significant violence,” noting that ” nothing justifies what happened in terms of arrests or accusations ”.
It is worth noting that thousands of French people demonstrated against the French comprehensive security bill in the capital, Paris, which stipulates restrictions on photographing police officers and posting photos on social media, especially to document cases of police violence, as this project was later abandoned.
