A recent study showed that the antibodies that the body produces when infected with the emerging corona virus can remain inside it for at least 6 months after recovering from the disease.
The study, highlighted by the British network “Sky News”, found that 99 percent of the participants who had tested positive for infection retained antibodies against the Corona virus for 3 months after infection, while 88 percent of them kept the antibodies for 6 months.
The study conducted by the “Biobank” in Great Britain indicated that 8.8 per cent of the UK population had been infected by the December 2020 infection, and this percentage reached 12.4 per cent in London and 5.5 percent in Scotland.
The study was based on measuring previous levels of “Covid 19” infection in different population groups across the UK, in addition to the duration of antibodies in those infected.
“Biobank” chief scientist Naomi Allen said: “This major study revealed that the vast majority of people retain antibodies for at least 6 months after infection with the coronavirus.”
He added: “Although we cannot confirm the extent of this link to immunity, the results indicate that people can be protected from further infection for at least 6 months after natural infection.”
Over a 6-month period, from late May 2020 to early December 2020, the UK Biobank collected monthly blood samples and data on potential symptoms from 20,200 participants and their adult children and grandchildren for the purpose of the study.
The researchers found that the antibodies of the young were higher than those of the elderly, by 13 percent in those under 30 and 6.7 percent in those over 70.
The most common symptoms associated with the presence of antibodies to the Corona virus were loss of sense of taste and smell, which was reported by 43 percent of study participants.
