Ottawa – AFP: Residents of an Ottawa neighborhood seek to change the name of their street, “Trump Avenue”, which became a source of shame for them after it became interesting.
Overlooking “Trump Avenue” on the western side of the Canadian capital, there are brick-roofed houses, each with two garages and a space for children to play hockey.
Central Park, whose streets take their name from the streets of New York, was built in the late 1980s, long before the American real estate mogul entered politics.
There is also Madison Park, Bloomingdale Street, Manhattan Crescent, and Staten Way.
And Bonnie Boering moved to the region in 2008, “when I was saying to people who lived on ‘Trump Avenue’ and I added ‘Yes, Donald himself,’ people were smiling pretentiously and some were expressing regret, this kind of reaction.”
He added: “But now, after undermining democracy and inciting revolt, with a violent attack on the United States Capitol, it is time to change the name of our street.”
This week, Riley Brockington, an Ottawa city official, began lobbying for the name change of people whose houses face the street.
Some residents have been petitioning city officials for years to change the name of the street, but Brookington objected to this, fearing insulting Trump while he was in power.
“He was afraid this would have repercussions in Canada, that Trump would announce punitive measures if he informs him that the national capital of Canada is seeking to remove his name from the street sign,” Brookington said. “With his departure from the White House, I think the time is right to try to do that.”
And 50 percent of parents must agree to the name change to trigger a process that could take months.
