The United States Senate rejected tonight, Tuesday, a measure by some Republican legislators to stop the impeachment process of the former president of the country, Donald Trump, since it contradicts the constitution.
And 55 members of the Senate voted to reject a demand made by Republican Senator Rand Paul to halt the impeachment, in exchange for the support of just 45 lawmakers.
Senators were sworn in Tuesday night in Trump’s second impeachment proceedings amid immediate challenge to the constitutionality of Paul’s trial.
The Republican senator said he would impose a procedural vote in the trial this afternoon, the first test of how Republicans in the Senate will view the upcoming trial.
Most of the senators voted to start the hearings on February 9.
And the Senate, the upper house of the United States Congress, received, on Monday night, the legislation to isolate Trump in the context of accusing him of “inciting rebellion”, following the assault on Congress by of some of his supporters. on January 6 in a wave of riots that killed 5 people.
A successful impeachment process requires the support of two-thirds of the 100 senators who will serve as jurors during court hearings chaired by Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy.
On January 13, 2021, a majority of the members of the US House of Representatives, including 10 Republican lawmakers, voted to pass legislation that would impeach Trump.
Trump, who left office on January 20 under the mandate of his successor, Democrat Joe Biden, thus became the first president in US history to face impeachment twice.
Democratic leaders stressed that the goal of the impeachment process for Trump, who they said represents a grave danger to the people of the United States and its “democracy,” is to prevent him from assuming future government positions.
