Avril Haynes, US President-elect Joe Biden’s candidate for Director of National Intelligence, vowed to declassify the intelligence report on the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and present it to Congress.

“Yes, I will abide by the law,” Hines said during a Senate hearing on Tuesday, in response to a question from Senator Ron Wyden on whether to send a report to Congress, if appointed, on Khashoggi’s murder.

The United States had imposed sanctions on 17 Saudis for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018, but many members of Congress accused the administration of President Donald Trump of trying to “protect” Saudi Arabia from the surrender of accounts.

In 2019, Congress asked the Director of National Intelligence to reveal who ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, but he refused, insisting that the information must be kept secret.

Later, Congress passed a legal amendment requiring the Trump administration to provide a full report on those responsible for the crime, but Trump did not respond to this demand.
