Republican Majority Leader in the United States Senate, Mitch McConnell
The Republican Majority Leader in the US Senate claimed that “the mob that attacked the Capitol was instigated by President Donald Trump.”
“The mob has been saturated with lies,” McConnell, the influential Republican leader and senator from Kentucky, said in remarks to him Tuesday. “They have provoked the president and other powerful people.”
McConnell considered that Congress had done its duty despite the violence of January 6, as it approved the victory of president-elect, Joe Biden, and his deputy, Kamala Harris.
“They have tried to use violence and fear,” McConnell said publicly, to disrupt the work of Congress, adding, on the eve of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration: “We will have a safe inauguration here at the facade of the Capitol “.
McConnell’s comments come just before Congress considers the question of impeachment of President Trump, and while he previously said he has “not yet decided” how to vote on the resolution, it is believed that many Republican senators will follow McConnell’s lead if decides to vote affirmatively.
The impeachment decision needs the vote of 17 Republican senators and all 50 Democratic senators in Congress.
