In a move that may be exceptional and unprecedented in American history, a New York Times report revealed that President Trump discussed granting himself a presidential pardon days before the end of his presidential term.
The newspaper cited two people who said Trump had suggested to his aides that they grant themselves a presidential pardon.
Trump had shown a pre-interest in the idea, having long claimed that he had the ability to forgive himself, while his recent discussion with his advisers is a sign of the possibility that he may move down this path, according to the American newspaper.
The report saw Trump’s study of this matter as an indication of his belief that his opponents may resort to prosecution after he officially left office on January 20, the day of the transfer of power to the president-elect of United States, Joe Biden.
He added that legal experts consider that the implementation of this order by Trump is “dangerous”, because it makes presidents presidents above the law and would protect them from any legal responsibility for the crimes they committed during their presidential terms.
It indicated that the presidential pardon is applied within the scope of federal law and does not provide any protection against state crimes.
Many of Trump’s allies are reported to have turned against him after his supporters stormed the Congress building in Washington.
