Iranian media reported that the Navy of the “Iranian Revolutionary Guard” detained a ship flying the South Korean flag in Gulf waters on Monday.
As reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim, citing sources that it described as “informed,” that one of the reasons for the arrest of this ship is that it caused environmental and chemical contamination in the Gulf waters, indicating that this ship was detained by the Army of the Revolutionary Guard.
“Tasnim” reported that this ship is flying the South Korean flag and is carrying 7,200 tons of “ethanol”. The ship’s crew, who are from Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar, were detained.
For its part, “The Associated Press” reported that satellite data published by “Marine Traffic.com” showed that the tanker “MT Hancock Chimi” was detained in front of the city of Bandar Abbas on Monday afternoon without explanation.
The tanker left Saudi Arabia bound for the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations Center, which specializes in information exchange and is overseen by the British Royal Navy in the region, acknowledged that there was “interaction” between a merchant ship and the Iranian authorities.
The center said the merchant ship had tried to “change course” to avoid Iranian territorial waters.
Rebecca Rebaric, a spokeswoman for the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet, said that Fleet Command was aware of the situation and was monitoring it.
