Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said calls from some countries not to recognize the presidential elections scheduled for this year in Syria undermine the stable performance of official institutions in this country.
Vershinin added, in an interview with “Novosti”: “Despite the negative factors and the restrictions imposed due to the Corona virus, work continues in Geneva, the Constitutional Committee for Syria. The fifth round of consultations between the Syrian parties is scheduled. to take place from January 25 to 29, during which time. Constitutional principles will be discussed and solutions acceptable to both parties will have to be seriously sought. “
The deputy minister added: “In the meantime, statements appear in some international forums about the urgent adoption of a new constitution and the lack of recognition of the upcoming presidential elections in Syria. In practice, this means depriving Syrians of the right to elect to their leaders and at the same time undermine the stability of the work of Syrian state institutions. “
The deputy minister stressed that Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council and the working rules of the Constitutional Committee “directly impose the need to advance in the political process, led and implemented by the Syrians themselves, without external interference and without imposing artificial deadlines. “.
The Russian diplomat concluded: “It is on this basis that it is possible to reach a long-term political agreement in Syria.”
Under the current Syrian constitution, presidential elections are scheduled for 2021.
Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with the “Novosti” agency that he could make his decision to participate in the presidential elections earlier this year.
