Erdogan seeks an alternative to the “50 + 1” clause to cling to power

The “Asharq Al-Awsat” newspaper, citing sources from Turkey’s ruling “Justice and Development” party, said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is working to bring about changes within the party before the 2023 elections.

He added that the changes will target the party’s structures and policies, to avoid failure in the next parliamentary and presidential elections.

The sources added that the sudden resignation of Erdogan’s son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, was the beginning of the process of change in justice and development.

At the same time, the Turkish newspaper Zaman quoted the leader of the opposition Future Party in Turkey, Ahmet Davutoglu, as saying that “Erdogan is looking with his extremist nationalist allies for an alternative to the (50 + 1) condition of remaining in power.”

He added: “Erdogan now has only one intention, which is to cling to power in any way that pushes him to seek alternatives.”

And he added, “with the presidential system a strange structure emerged, controlled by a single person, which eliminated the principle of separation of powers.”

Davutoglu added: “Erdogan will realize as time goes by that he has become a prisoner of the 50 + 1 condition. I am sure that after a while, the president will have to look for an alternative.”

The head of the Future Party stressed the importance of paying attention to the participation of 23 parties in political life within a year, stressing that it is impossible for Erdogan to get 50 + 1 in the first round of the elections.

Davutoglu indicated that when Erdogan sees the votes of his supporters and sympathizers of the coalition of the “Justice and Development” and “Nationalist Movement” parties fall to 35%, he will place the parliamentary system on his agenda as a condition of political pragmatism.

Opinion polls said that Erdogan, the Popular Alliance candidate, failed to get more than 40% of the vote in the presidential elections, thus seeking to cancel the 50 + 1 condition to win the presidency.

To achieve this, the ruling coalition proposes an alternative to this condition: adopt the candidate who obtained the most votes in the first round, win the presidential elections and cancel the second round, according to reforms to the political parties law.
