North Korean leader Kim Jong Un opened the new year with a message for his compatriots and by visiting the mausoleum of his father and grandfather, but there was no indication that he would deliver a speech as he had in previous years.

Korea’s Central News Agency reported on Friday that Kim thanked people in the letter for their trust in the ruling party and their support even in “difficult” times.

The North Korean leader had previously apologized for failing to fulfill his promises to improve economic conditions and for the hardships that citizens have endured as a result of international sanctions and strict measures aimed at preventing the spread of the Coronavirus.

“Also in the new year, I will strive to usher in a new era in which the ideals and wishes of our people will be fulfilled,” Kim wrote, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea says it has no confirmed coronavirus cases, although South Korean and U.S. officials don’t believe it.

The country’s economy has staggered due to self-imposed border closures and other strict measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Official media showed crowds wearing masks and celebrating the New Year in Pyongyang’s main square during a concert and fireworks display on Thursday night.

As the clock struck midnight, Kim and other prominent officials visited the Palacio del Sol, which houses the body of his father and grandfather.
