In “rare” move … Israel reveals number of attacks in Syria in 2020

The Israeli military, which rarely comments on airstrikes by its forces, said in a report Thursday that it had bombed nearly 50 targets in Syria in 2020.

The Israeli army’s annual report did not provide details of the bombed targets, but Israel is believed to have launched hundreds of attacks in Syria since the outbreak of the conflict in 2011.

The attacks targeted regular Syrian forces, allied Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.

Israel has vowed to continue to prevent Iran from establishing its military presence in Syria, as Tehran has supported President Bashar al-Assad during the nearly decade-long war.

“The figures in the report are correct as of December 20,” a military spokeswoman told AFP.

The report, without going into detail, said that Israeli warplanes carried out 1,400 “operational” sorties in 2020.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since the terror group took control of the Strip in 2007.

The first war broke out in December 2008, when Israel launched “Operation Cast Lead” to stop the rocket fire.

It ended with a ceasefire in January 2009, after 1,440 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions carried out military exercises in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, including launching rockets into the sea, to coincide with the 2008 war anniversary.
