On Thursday, Iranian authorities carried out the death sentence against a young man in the northern city of Rasht, after he was found guilty of killing a man as a result of a mass fight in 2007, when he was still a child.
The Human Rights Organization of Iran stated in a statement that “the security authorities of Lacan prison in Rasht, in northern Iran, this morning carried out the death sentence against the accused, Muhammad Hussein Rezaei.” Rezaei was 16 years old at the time of the murder and was arrested at the time.
Amnesty International said yesterday that the accused claimed responsibility for the murder in 2007 during a “forced confession”, but withdrew his confession in court, adding that “executing people who were children at the time of the crime is a serious violation of the law Human Rights International “.
Iran is one of the countries where children are executed, and last year six minors were executed around the world, four of them in Iran.
According to Amnesty International, at least 90 minors in conflict with the law are in danger of execution in Iran.
In May this year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, described the Iranian government’s behavior in this regard as “shameful”, referring to the execution of other juvenile offenders, according to ARM News.
