Dozens of Syrian regime forces were killed and wounded in an “ISIS” attack on military buses on the Homs-Deir Ezzor highway on Wednesday.
While the regime news agency “SANA” said the dead were civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 38 regime forces were killed and 15 others injured, as a result of an ISIS ambush, indicating that the death toll is not definitive.
The Observatory said the ambush targeted three military buses in the Shula desert on the Homs-Deir al-Zour highway, carrying soldiers, as well as gunmen loyal to the regime and the Fourth Division, to spend the New Year holidays. in their homes, noting that some of the injured are in critical condition.
The operation was followed by massive military reinforcements for the Russian Fifth Corps, regime forces and the “Zainabiyoun” militia to the target site, along with 16 Russian airstrikes on sites deep in the desert believed to be they are affiliated with “ISIS”.
The Observatory indicated that the new attack raises the death toll from the regime’s losses, during the period from March 24, 2019 to today, to 1,214 regime forces and militants loyal to them of Syrian and non-Syrian nationality, including at least two Russians, in addition to 145 of the pro-Iranian militias of non-Syrian nationalities.
