US President Donald Trump is urging his supporters to meet in Washington on January 6, in a last-ditch effort to pressure Congress not to endorse Joe Biden’s election victory.
Thousands of Trump supporters, from various groups across the country, are expected to take to the streets of the US capital in support of Trump’s unsubstantiated statements about the widespread electoral fraud that they believe led to his defeat in the elections. November 3 elections.
In two tweets last weekend, Trump urged supporters to take part in the rally, describing the election as “the biggest fraud in our nation’s history.”
“See you in Washington on January 6,” he wrote on Sunday, “Don’t miss out.” The call for the rally raises fears of new acts of violence after the previous pro-Trump demonstration in which the group “Brow Boys” participated on December 12, when many people were stabbed and dozens of people arrested.
Trump apparently hopes the protesters can pressure Congress to reject the recent recount of the votes of the state electorate and reverse the outcome of his electoral defeat.
And the group “Stop Stealing” (votes) on the Internet announced: “We the people must go to the courtyard of the United States Capitol and tell Congress, do not approve” the result.
On January 6, Vice President Mike Pence is supposed to lead Congress by passing the votes for the electorate of each state that represent the results of the popular vote.
In the joint session of the House and Senate, Pence will read the official documents announcing the number of electoral votes for each state and then announce the winner.
This process is supposed to be, as it has almost always been, a formality. Democrat Biden won 306 of the top voters, while Trump received only 232 votes.
The Trump campaign has lost dozens of legal challenges in many states whose results have been questioned, with one judge after another saying it shows no evidence of significant fraud.
However, the session could be delayed if lawmakers in both houses formally opposed any of the state reports.
Trump and his supporters are pressuring Pence to unilaterally reject a series of electorate documents in pro-Biden states, a power that legal experts say Pence does not have.
