The Jerusalem Post considered that “the peace movement between Morocco and Israel is not without risks for Moroccans, especially in the Western Sahara region, where the Polisario Front launches successive attacks against Moroccan security forces”, noting that “the Morocco’s first security challenges are in the Western Sahara region, where the Polisario Front is organizing a rebellion campaign against the Moroccan security forces, with the support of Algeria.
He stressed that “Morocco has rights in this disputed region, as many tribes in the region have historically been linked to the Moroccan monarchy.”
He noted that “the stakes are high, especially as Iran may inflame the Western Sahara front by increasing its support for the Polisario in an effort to undermine the territorial integrity of Morocco.”
In 2018, Morocco provided documents to the Iranian government showing that Tehran was arming and training the Polisario with the help of Hezbollah. Weapons provided included shoulder anti-aircraft missiles such as the SAM-9 and SAM-11. As a result, Morocco severed its diplomatic relations with Iran. It turned out that the Iranians were using their embassy in Algeria as a conduit for the Polisario, according to the newspaper.
In late 2019, the United Nations obtained images of weapons used by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, which included anti-tank guided missiles believed to be Iranian-made weapons.
