A new study revealed that wearing a used muzzle may be less effective than not wearing it in preventing infection with the emerging corona virus.
The British newspaper “Daily Mail” reported that the study authors examined 3-layer masks, which are commonly used among those involved in surgery.
And researchers from the University of Massachusetts and California, USA, found that the new masks can purify 75% of the tiny airborne particles that are often responsible for infection.
But when you use a used muzzle more than once, it filters out only 25% of the small droplets, because the muzzle wears out with each use.
The newspaper quoted Dr. Jinxiang Shi, a researcher involved in the study, as saying: “It is natural for us to think that wearing a muzzle, whether new or old, is always better than not wearing it.”
But Jinxiang Shi pointed out that the study results showed that this belief was inaccurate.
During the study, the results of which were published in the Journal of Fluid Physics, the participants developed a computer model of a person wearing a 3-layer mask.
The researchers tracked down the tiny particles that could land on the muzzle and face, and their potential to reach the nose and lungs.
