“This is an option that Morocco has freely adopted,” El-Mechichi said in an interview with France 24. We respect the fraternal choice of Morocco and the country we love so much. For Tunisia, this issue is not on the table.

He added that “each country has its own reality and truth, and each country has its diplomacy, which it considers best for its people,” and pointed out that the US administration did not raise this issue with him.

Last Thursday, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that Morocco promised to normalize relations with “Israel” and that Washington recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara.

After the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan, Morocco has become the fourth Arab country since August to announce the normalization of its relations with “Israel.”

Morocco’s decision sparked some criticism in the Maghreb, as Algeria warned against “foreign operations” aimed at destabilizing it.

And the issue of Western Sahara has cast a negative shadow over Algerian-Moroccan relations for more than 40 years.

Morocco claims sovereignty over the former Spanish colony, as well as the Polisario Front, neighboring Rabat, and its main regional rivalry. The UN-led negotiations to find a solution for the region have stalled since spring 2019.
