Israeli media reported that “Israel” established diplomatic relations with Bhutan for the first time. The agreement was signed today, Saturday, by the ambassador of “Israel” in India, Ron Malka.
According to the “Ynet” website, the agreement with Bhutan has nothing to do with the normalization agreements that Israel signed with the Arab countries, the most recent of which was Morocco since last August.
The foreign ministries of “Israel” and Bhutan held secret talks over the past year with the aim of establishing official relations and delegations in Jerusalem and Tempo, the capital of Bhutan.
Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and his Bhutanese counterpart Tandi Dorje spoke by phone at the end of last week and agreed to cooperate in the fields of water management, agriculture and health.
“I would like to thank the Kingdom of Bhutan and welcome the decision to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel,” Ashkenazi said, adding: “I invite my friend, Chancellor Dorje, to visit Israel to enhance cooperation between countries.” .
He also hopes to welcome the King of Bhutan next year on his first official visit to “Israel”.
Bhutan is a kingdom located east of the Himalayas bordering India and the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Bhutan has formal diplomatic relations with only 53 countries and the list does not include the United States, the United Kingdom, France or Russia.
Bhutan also does not have diplomatic relations with China, which closed its borders with it in 1959.
The population of the Kingdom does not exceed 750,000 people and borders India and China.
