Iran announced that its Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif received a phone call from his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in the context of the dispute between the two countries over a statement by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Zarif and Çavuşolu “affirmed the close friendly relations between Turkey and Iran and emphasized the strong good neighbor policy followed by Ankara.”

Çavuşolu gave Zarif assurances about “President Erdogan’s respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran.”

The Turkish minister explained that Erdogan was not aware of the delicate details surrounding the poem Bakhtiar Wahhabzadeh, which he recited recently during his visit to Baku, noting that the president was convinced that the poem about the Aras river is related to the region of Lachin and the Karabakh region.

For his part, Zarif noted, according to the statement, the importance of friendly relations between the two neighboring countries, which means mutual respect, expressing his hope to expand bilateral relations between Tehran and Ankara on the basis of mutual trust.

Tehran and Ankara recently exchanged the summons for ambassadors, in the context of diplomatic tension sparked by Erdogan’s statement, in which many in Iran saw an attack on the country’s sovereignty.
