Scientists in Australia are conducting research on a type of protein, found in breast milk, in an effort to prove its effectiveness in treating emerging corona virus infection, according to the “Daily Mail” newspaper.
Breast milk is one of the richest sources of lactoferrin and it is also found in cow’s milk in lower proportions.
According to the Science Direct website, breast milk contains approximately 1-2 milligrams per milliliter of this protein, which exceeds its concentration in animal milk by up to 100 times.
Lactoferrin is a protein that the human immune system depends on to prevent viruses from binding to receptors carried by human cells.
Scientists call the lactoferrin protein “rose gold” because of its color and effectiveness in stopping the spread of viruses.
Scientists at Freedom Foods, in association with the Hunter Institute for Medical Research, are investigating the protein they hope for in Australia, where the protein is being tested with support from the federal government.
Speaking to local channel Nine, Freedom Foods director of nutrition science Sonia Kukulgan said the ongoing research on lactoferrin is “beyond exciting.”
And he emphasized that “anything capable of helping control the global Covid pandemic (will) be very important.”
