The Algerian Foreign Ministry considered the announcement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, of the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara between Rabat and the Polisario Front. The effect is legally eliminated, according to a statement issued by the Algerian Foreign Ministry, which was published in local newspapers.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry clarified, in a statement on Saturday, that “the US decision to declare Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara has no legal effect and contradicts all United Nations resolutions”, highlighting that “the issue of Western Sahara is a decolonization issue “.

“The US decision undermines all de-escalation efforts made to date, noting that Algeria’s position is based on international legitimacy and against the logic of force and suspicious agreements in its strong support for the cause of the Sahrawi people, “the statement added.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry affirmed that “the solution to the Western Sahara problem is based on international law and the established doctrine of the United Nations and the African Union, and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a decree on Thursday that recognizes sovereignty of Morocco on Western Sahara, which is disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front “.

The Polisario Front has the direct support of Algeria in its conflict with the Moroccan government since the 1970s, and the Polisario demands the independence of Western Sahara (southern Morocco) and the right of its inhabitants to self-determination.
