The mayor of Milan, Italy, Giuseppe Sala, announced on Friday that Patrick George Zaki, an Egyptian activist jailed in Cairo, will receive an honorary certificate of citizenship.

Mayor Sala said on his Facebook page: “The Milan City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to grant Patrick Zaki honorary citizenship.”
He noted that “it is a gesture that confirms the closeness of Milan with this young investigator imprisoned in Egypt, as well as with all those who fight for human rights.”
The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights confirmed on Monday that the Third Circuit (terrorism) of the Egyptian Criminal Court had decided to renew Zaki’s detention for a period of 45 days pending investigation.
According to the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, the Egyptian citizen Patrick Zaki was arrested on February 7, when he was returning from Italy to spend his holidays in Egypt.
Zaki was accused of spreading false news and statements that disturb social peace, inciting demonstrations without obtaining permission, with the intention of undermining the prestige of the state, disturbing the peace and public security, inciting the overthrow of the government, and promoting principles and ideas that lead to change the basic principles of the constitution.
He also faces charges for managing and using an account on the information network for the purpose of disturbing public order, damaging national security, promoting the commission of a terrorist crime and using violence.
