“The United States intends to impose sanctions on Turkey for the purchase of a Russian missile defense system,” Reuters reported, citing US sources.

On Wednesday, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said that punishing his country for buying Russian S-400 missile defense systems would be “extremely counterproductive and would damage Turkish-US relations.”

Kalin added: “Ankara believes that it is possible to agree on a good and positive agenda with the administration of US President-elect Joe Biden.”

In a related context, a Turkish official said that the US sanctions on Turkey will damage relations between the two countries, which are members of NATO.

“The sanctions will not work and will be unconstructive. They will damage relations,” the official added. He also stated that “Turkey supports the solution of these problems through diplomacy and negotiations. We will not accept unilateral sanctions.”

Meanwhile, the Turkish lira continued its losses against the dollar in late trading on Thursday after sources said the United States is in the process of imposing sanctions on Turkey.

The pound fell to 7.9290 against the greenback and registered 7.9175 at 18:22 GMT, down 1.25 percent from Wednesday’s close.

Last October, Turkey issued an advisory to restrict air and maritime space off its Black Sea coast to allow launch tests, including the Russian S-400 defense system, a week after its transfer to the region.

In response, the United States strongly condemned Turkey’s operation of the “S-400” missile systems, warning of “potential serious repercussions” of this Turkish move, for security relations between the two countries.
