The administration of US President Donald Trump presented a new aid plan proposal to revive the US economy, which was immediately rejected by leaders of the Democratic opposition who favor a plan proposed by members of both parties in Parliament and that is being negotiated.
The White House put forward the proposal in hopes of ending the months-long stumbling block and finding a compromise between Democrats and Republicans.
“I submitted a Trump proposal for $ 916 billion,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
Mnuchin presented the proposal to the Speaker of the Democratic House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, during a meeting with her.
The value of this new proposal is slightly more than the $ 908 billion aid plan that was recently proposed by a group of Democrats and Republicans and that served as the basis for negotiations between the two parties.
“Bipartisan negotiations are the best hope for a bipartisan solution,” said Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, leader of the Senate Democrats.
“The president’s proposal begins with the reduction of unemployment compensation that is currently being discussed by the Senate from 180 billion to 40 billion,” he added.
The rejection of Pelosi and Schumer once again casts new doubts on the possibility of adopting the additional recovery plan before Joe Biden takes office on January 20, at a time when the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic is again pushing to the US states to reduce their economic activity.
The time available is short because millions of Americans among the most vulnerable will not receive any federal or state aid as of December 26 if the plan is backed by approval.
