He was later accused of insulting Khomeini, and a few days later the conviction of a former vice president was announced. Today, Tuesday, the judicial authorities announced criminal proceedings against an assistant to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Minister of the Environment Issa Calantri.
Calantri faces legal proceedings before two courts in Tehran, according to Judicial Authority spokesman Ghulam Hossein Ismaili during an online press conference.
Ismaili added that the prosecutions against Calantri are related to “various problems, such as the situation in (a lake in northern Iran) and the incidents in which he registered and his statements were disseminated in the recent period through social media.” . The spokesperson did not elaborate on what is being taken against this moderate figure.
He emphasized: “Your explanations have been heard. We have to wait for the court’s decision. “
On social media, conservatives accused Calantari of insulting the memory of Ayatollah Khomeini, the guide to the Iranian revolution, in an interview published in December 2019.
Calantri recently rejected these accusations, in statements reported by the official Iranian news agency.
The Iranian vice president said: “Whoever listens to the entire interview knows that it does not contain any insults. It is illogical to draw conclusions from a clip of 20 to 40 seconds, while the interview lasts two hours ”.
The revelation of these prosecutions came just days after the conviction of Shahidakht Mawlawardi, former vice president for Iranian affairs, Hassan Rouhani.
Fars said she was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of “providing confidential information and documents … with the aim of undermining national security.”
The former official expressed her intention to appeal the ruling.
For months, the Rouhani government has come under heavy attack from the conservatives who make up the majority in parliament, since the February elections, which recorded a record abstention rate.
