After being abandoned by tourists due to the Corona pandemic, Venice decided to brave gloomy conditions and dressed in its best style by illuminating its most famous landmarks, namely St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal. in the Italian city, to celebrate the end of the year parties.
And in St. Mark’s Square, where the church of the same name is famous, Italian artist Fabrizio Plesi built a Christmas tree between two columns, on a site where executions were carried out when Venice was an independent republic.
Huge rectangular displays display gold-colored images, stacked one on top of the other, resembling the structure of a traditional Christmas tree. At night, these screens flood the square and pedestrians with warm lights that reflect off the wet cobblestones of the famous square.
“My goal is to illuminate this city hungry for light and culture, and in search of new feelings,” says Fabrizio Plessi.
Plessy admits that “Christmas this year is different than it was in previous years” due to the pandemic, adding: “Unfortunately, we face this problem like others in the rest of the world, but I strongly believe in positivity.”
When asked about the innovative nature of his Christmas tree, Plessy must “make great use of digital technologies and all contemporary tools, because I believe that the artist must use the various media available in his time.”
At the end of St. Mark’s Square, in front of the huge church, another art installation by Plessy has been erected called “The Golden Age”. Huge screens placed on the first floor of the Currier Museum show images that show what appears to be a torrent of golden light that gives the impression of seeing a thread of gold.
“I think that having two great works of mine on such a wonderful stage is a huge privilege,” says the artist.
In addition to St. Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge, another important site on the Grand Canal in Venice, is also illuminated by exceptional lighting on the occasion of Christmas and New Years.
As night falls, images are displayed on the bridge piers showing angels and the famous golden lion on a red background, the emblem of the city. These images are reflected in the waters of the Grand Canal, which gives a magical atmosphere to the place.
