Iran’s Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Miqdad in Tehran on his first visit to al-Miqdad after he became the Syrian regime’s foreign minister.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Al-Miqdad is discussing in Tehran the latest developments in the Syrian crisis and bilateral Syrian-Iranian relations.

The Foreign Ministry affirmed that Tehran believes that a political solution is the only way to resolve the Syrian crisis, and that Zarif expressed his country’s support for the negotiations on the Astana formula, and described the recent return conference as positive. of refugees in Damascus.

“Iran supports the people and government of Syria in the war against terrorism,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Twitter.

Al-Miqdad offered his condolences to Iran for the recent assassination of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in a mysterious operation.

Al-Miqdad arrived in Tehran early Monday morning on a two-day official visit. He is also scheduled to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and other officials.

Faisal al-Miqdad succeeded the late Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on November 22, several days after al-Muallem’s death.
