A “mysterious” disease hitting India has killed one person and 227 people have been hospitalized in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
Patients who were transported to the hospital had symptoms including nausea and loss of consciousness.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the disease that swept through the city of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, over the weekend, the BBC reported. A medical official at Eluru State Hospital told the Indian Express that “people who have contracted the disease, especially children, have started. Suddenly vomiting after complaining of burning eyes, and some of them passed out or had epileptic seizures. “
For his part, the state prime minister, Jaganmohan Reddy, said that special medical teams are being sent to Eluru to investigate the cause of the disease.
The State Health Minister, Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas, ruled out that water contamination was the cause of the disease, after blood tests were performed on the patients.
Srinivas added: “It is a mysterious disease, but in-depth laboratory analysis will reveal what it is.”
