United States President-elect Joe Biden intends to nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becera to the post of Secretary of Health and Human Services, adding another Latino member to his team, who is largely distinguished. for its diversity, US media reported Sunday.

As a member of Congress, Becera was an outspoken advocate for Latino rights and a strong advocate for former President Barack Obama’s health care program, which came under heavy attack from outgoing President Donald Trump and Republicans.

NBC, The New York Times and other outlets cited anonymous sources close to the president-elect that there is a tendency to nominate Becera for this new position.

Becera, 62, became California state attorney in 2016, succeeding Vice President-elect Kamala Harris after being elected to the Senate. Becera was the first Hispanic person to hold this position.

While in office, Becera also defended the “Dhaka” immigrant rights program before the Supreme Court.

And if Becera is installed in the position of Minister of Health, he will have to lead the ministry in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic that has left more than 282,000 dead in the United States.

Biden previously announced that Alejandro Mayorcas, of Cuban descent, was elected to the post of Minister of National Security.
