Sources inside Iran reported that Iranian leader Ali Khamenei handed over all his powers to his son Mojtaba after his health deteriorated, at a time when the country is going through many crises, the most recent of which was the murder of one of its most prominent scientists in the nuclear field about a week ago in Tehran.

“Iranian sources speak about Khamenei’s deteriorating health since Friday,” said Iranian journalist Muhammad Ahwazi, via Twitter, adding that “people close to Khamenei fear very much for his health this time.”

He noted that sources confirmed that “the tasks and powers of the Iranian Supreme Leader’s office have been transferred to his son Mojtaba Khamenei, who oversees various security and intelligence departments in Iran.”

Ahwazi stated that “it is not yet clear why Khamenei’s health has deteriorated if he suffers from prostate cancer or as a result of another disease,” explaining that “Khamenei’s health has been deteriorating since Friday, leading to to the summons of senior doctors from the Masih Daneshwari Hospital in Tehran. “

The Iranian journalist noted that a meeting between Khamenei and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was scheduled for Friday, which was canceled as a result of these events.

The “Financial Times” newspaper said, in a previous report published last January, that an intense battle is being fought within the corridors of the regime in Iran to choose a successor to Khamenei (81 years old), in a decision that would determine the fate of Iran in the coming decades.

He claimed there are potential candidates to succeed Khamenei, namely Mojtaba, 51, who is continuing advanced religious studies at the Qom religious seminary, and the other is Ibrahim Raisi, head of the hard-line judiciary who lost the presidential election. of 2017 before Rouhani.

Notably, in November 2019 the United States imposed sanctions on Mojtaba Khamenei and Ibrahim Raisi on charges of supporting terrorism, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the attack on the US embassy in Tehran.
