General Security launched an investigation about two weeks ago into an embezzlement operation suspected of involving members and officers, and arrested two officers suspected of being involved in the embezzlement of passport and residence visa fees. Al-Akhbar learned that one of the suspects works in the “Arabs and foreigners” department and the other in the “Public Relations” division.

As for the amount of the embezzled sums, it has not yet been determined, but it is estimated that it may reach billions of lire, noting that the investigation is focused on identifying the gaps that allowed this. An investigation is underway to determine the start date of these two items and others with the theft of funds, information that likely began several years ago. Until today, several officers and agents associated with the corruption network have been questioned, knowing that one of them is a retired sergeant.
In a call with the Director General of Public Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, he assured «Al-Akhbar» that the Directorate has opened an investigation under the supervision of the competent Judicial Branch, indicating that information about the investigation will not be disclosed before complete investigation and clarify circumstances as usual. He spoke of a statement that will be issued once the investigation and referral of suspects to the judiciary.
Representative Jamil Al-Sayed had reported a 14 billion pound embezzlement operation by a corruption ring in Public Safety that had been working to collect and control fees since 2014.
The General Directorate of Public Security issued a statement in response to what was expressed by the captain, explaining that “for ten days an investigation has been carried out with soldiers suspected of having committed embezzlement operations and that the investigation is carried out in complete secrecy under the supervision of the competent Judicial Power to determine the authors and the value of the embezzled sums, if any. The Directorate did not want to discuss this file in order to guarantee the confidentiality of the investigation, leading to the desired results.
