Adding good news to other good news about efforts to eliminate Covid-19, as scientists at the American University of Georgia discovered an anti-virus drug that they said would change the “rules of the game” until it is available a vaccine for the disease.
The researchers said that a drug called Molnupiravir had been shown to be effective in stopping the infection in animals in as little as 24 hours.
“This is the first evidence of an oral drug available to prevent rapid transmission of SARS-Cove 2. MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 could be a game changer,” study leader Dr. Richard Plimber told WSB-TV (Channel 2) in Atlanta. “
According to the study, the drug significantly reduces the severity of the infection and is recommended to be taken early (after approval) to double its effectiveness.
And the antiviral drug is currently being tested in humans, according to the study published in the medical journal “Nature.”
The study authors emphasized that molnupiravir will not replace a vaccine, but will severely reduce the spread of infection.
