In a statement posted on Facebook late Thursday night, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry confirmed its continued monitoring of the pirate ship incident off the Nigerian coast, with Egyptian nationals on board.

The statement added that the consular sector in the ministry is in contact with the families of the abductees, to reassure them and inform them of the latest efforts made to free their families, and that the Egyptian embassy in Abuja continues to monitor the services of Nigerian security and the leadership of the naval forces there to take all possible measures to release the hostages.

Earlier, the ship’s owner stated that there were 10 people on board, including a naval officer and an Egyptian engineer, and 3 Lebanese nationals, indicating that the pirates hijacked the ship off the coast of Nigeria during its voyage to Cameroon and demanded a ransom for the release of the ship and the hostages.
