“Following my instructions, the state apparatus will launch a massive and unprecedented movement against separatism,” Darmanan said in a tweet on Twitter.

He added that “in the next few days 76 mosques suspected of being separatists will be registered,” and that “those that should be closed will be closed.”

According to information published by the French newspaper Le Figaro and confirmed to the French Press Agency close to the minister, Darmanan sent on November 27 a memorandum to security directors throughout the country detailing the measures to be taken against these mosques, 16 of them which are located in the capital, Paris and its surroundings. And 60 in the rest of the country.

Among these mosques, 18 will be attacked, according to the minister’s instructions, with “immediate measures” that could amount to closure.

Sources explained to Agence France-Presse that 3 of these 18 mosques are located within the municipality of Seine Saint-Denis, noting that one of them refused to abide by a decision issued by the mayor and decided to close it, and the second was closed in 2019 but continued to pray, and the third was issued a security decision to close it, but state agencies. It did not check if it really closed or not.

The announcement of this security operation comes days before the cabinet meeting to be held next Wednesday to consider a bill aimed at “promoting republican principles” by combating “separatism” and “religious extremism.”

Under the pretext of terrorism, Muslims in France face a kind of sectarian discrimination against them by the French government, which is trying to cover up its failure to confront terrorism through its campaign against mosques.
