Israel received its first new battleships in a move considered by a senior navy commander, as part of “modernizing the fleet and strengthening the ability to face regional opponents” such as the Lebanese “Hezbollah.”
The battleship “ANS Magen” arrived at the port of Haifa on Wednesday and is the first of the “Saar-6” class.
The commander of Israeli naval operations, Admiral Eyal Harel, noted that “the new fleet will enhance the navy’s ability to protect Jewish state facilities to extract natural gas from opponents such as the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah.”
Harel said the facilities to extract oil resources off the Israeli coast “are the main target in Hezbollah’s target bank for next year,” indicating that the warships, which are of the Sa’ar-6 class , they are equipped with “the most advanced radar compared to any warship in the world”.
The deal to buy four battleships and three submarines from the German giant “ThyssenKrupp” is surrounded by suspicions of corruption, and its investigations include close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
