Gulf sources told Al-Jazeera that the next few hours may witness a breakthrough in the Gulf crisis, pointing to an active movement and talks taking place in the meantime that can lead to important results.
Jared Kushner, the adviser to the US president, arrived in the region as part of a final effort to resolve the crisis that began about 3 years ago, official sources from the US administration told news agencies. His tour will include meetings with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman and the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The “Wall Street Journal” quoted US officials as saying that the main focus of the talks will be to resolve the dispute over the flight of Qatari planes over Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The newspaper mentioned that the blocking countries secretly relaxed their 13 demands, noting that Saudi Arabia has shown a greater willingness to find common ground to resolve the crisis.
It should be noted that the State of Kuwait has played the role of mediator since the beginning of this crisis in an attempt to heal the Gulf fissure.
US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien had confirmed in simultaneous statements that the Trump administration wanted to resolve the crisis before his possible departure from the White House.
The four countries (Saudi Arabia, Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt) announced in June 2017 that they would sever their relations with Qatar and impose a blockade, and had established 13 conditions to reverse the blockade and sever ties. However, Doha affirmed its rejection of everything that affects its sovereignty and independence of its national decision, highlighting at the same time its willingness to dialogue on the basis of parity and respect for sovereignty.
