Aoun, during his meeting with the head of the US delegation that mediated the indirect negotiations to demarcate the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel, Ambassador John Deroche, noted that “the success of the maritime border demarcation negotiations improves stability in southern Lebanon and will allow investment of natural resources, such as gas and oil. “
President Aoun added: “The difficulties that arose in the last round of negotiations can be overcome through an in-depth investigation based on international law, the articles of the law of the sea and all the legal texts derived from them.”
The Lebanese leader pointed out that “the Lebanese negotiating delegation has clear instructions to negotiate based on them,” pointing out “the need to continue these negotiations to achieve the purpose of their conduct, and if it falters for any reason, other alternatives can be studied. “.
During the meeting, Ambassador Deroche presented the stages of the negotiation process and the US role in it, hoping that it “continues for the benefit of all.”
The meeting was attended by, on the US side, the US Ambassador to Beirut, Dorothy Shea, and the political adviser, Audrey Kiranen, and on the Lebanese side, former Minister Salim Jreissati, the Director General of the Presidency of the Republic, Antoine Choucair , and the two advisers, Brigadier General Paul Matar and Osama Khashab.
