Deir Ezzor: Syrian local sources revealed that the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Muslim Shahdan, was killed in an unidentified airstrike on Monday in the Deir Ezzor governorate, which borders Iraq.
Sources claimed that Shahdan and his bodyguards were subjected to an aerial bombardment by an unidentified fighter, shortly after they entered Syria via Iraq on Monday morning.
They noted that the raid took place near the village of Al-Suwayia, which is affiliated with the town of Albu Kamal, east of Deir Ezzor, and resulted in the death of Shahdan and 3 of his bodyguards.
Neither side has announced its support for the airstrike, which came at a remarkable moment 3 days after the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh near Tehran.
It should be noted that the Assad regime seized control of the city of Deir ez-Zor and the western parts of the governorate with the support of Iranian groups and Russia, following ISIS’s withdrawal from the region in November 2017.
Iranian-backed foreign groups that have become the regime’s ground forces are mainly concentrated in Deir Ezzor.
Individuals from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards command these groups from Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the “YBK / PKK” organization controls the rest of the province, east of the Euphrates.
