President-elect Joe Biden announced a series of appointments to the White House contact team within his next administration, after assuming the presidency on January 20, for women to fill all high-profile media positions in the team, for the first time in American history.
The spokeswoman for the US State Department during the presidency of Barack Obama, Jane Sackey, has been appointed spokesperson for the White House, while Biden has appointed her election campaign spokesperson, Kate Bedingfield, as director of communications.
The president-elect’s chief campaign adviser, Simon Sanders, will become the spokesperson for the vice president, Kamala Harris.
Former Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander, when she took over as Obama’s vice president, will manage Harris communications.
“I am proud to announce today that the White House contact team is made up entirely of women,” Biden said in a statement on his transition team’s website.
Biden-Harris’ campaign advisers, Karen John Pierre and Ashley Etienne, will serve as the deputy White House spokesperson and the vice president’s deputy communications director.
As for Billy Tobar, the former media director of Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was appointed deputy director of communications and is of Hispanic origin.
The transition team said in a tweet that it was the first time that an entire team of women held such important positions in the media.
Saki said on Twitter that the contact group “is the most diverse group in history and includes 6 mothers of young children.”
