An Iranian ship was mistakenly “bombed” during naval exercises in the Gulf of Oman.
The Iranian navy said friendly fire killed 19 sailors and wounded 15 others when an Iranian missile struck a support ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday.
Iranian television indicated that the logistical support ship was bombed after it “moved to move a target to its destination, without leaving enough distance between it and the target.”
A report indicated that the ship sank after being hit by a missile fired by another Iranian warship.
Konarac is a lightweight logistic support ship manufactured in the Netherlands and purchased by Iran prior to the 1979 Islamic revolution.
State television reported that it weighed 447 tons, was 47 meters long, and was equipped with four cruise missiles.
Over the past year, the United States and Iran have exchanged accusations for a series of incidents involving their forces in Gulf waters.
Tensions have increased since 2018, when the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran and re-imposed severe sanctions on its economy.
The Tasnim agency stated in a tweet in English that the Konarak ship sank after being hit by a missile fired by another Iranian warship.
She said Konarac “sank after being mistakenly exposed to the friendly fire of the Jamaran frigate with a missile during the maneuvers” on May 10.
