Hundreds of French protesters entered a clash with security men in the capital Paris on Saturday at the end of a demonstration to denounce police violence, after masked people threw stones and fireworks at policemen, and they will erect barricades.

Most of the protesters attended peacefully at first, but small groups of masked men, who were dressed in black, smashed windows and set two cars, a motorcycle and a cafe on fire, but the fires were quickly extinguished.

The security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd and, in late afternoon, opened water cannons at the remaining groups of protesters in Place de la Bastille.

The Interior Ministry estimated the number of protesters in Paris at about 46,000. Police said they arrested 9 of them.

Thousands of French people across the country took to the streets to protest police violence and demand freedom of the press after police beat up an African-American music producer, sparking protests over a bill believed to restrict the freedom of journalists to reveal police brutality.

Thousands more protested in Lille and Rennes, Strasbourg and other cities against the bill, which criminalizes the circulation of photographs of police officers in certain circumstances, which opponents describe as a limitation on freedom of the press.

Many carried banners reading “Who will protect us from the police,” “Stop police violence,” and “Strike democracy.”

The march was organized by journalists’ organizations and civil liberty groups, then joined by left-wing activists, environmental activists, and yellow vest protesters who have been protesting government policies for two years.
