Beirut The Interior Minister in the interim government of Lebanon, Mohamed Fahmy, sparked a great controversy among the political class and within the judiciary after accusations of corruption were brought against him.

Minister Mohamed Fahmy said on a television program that “corruption is great in the judiciary, and almost 95 percent of them are corrupt.”

The remarks by the minister, known for his numerous sensational remarks, came in light of an ongoing internal debate on the criminal audit at the Central Bank of Lebanon and investigations into the bombing that targeted the seaport of Beirut on August 4th.

Lebanon is going through a complex political and economic crisis after the record of the formation of the new government fell apart. The Supreme Judicial Council responded to statements by the Interior Minister, who is considered close to Major General Jamil Al-Sayed, known for his ties to Iran and Syria.

In a statement released on Friday, the council said: “What was issued against the judiciary and judges is unacceptable, absolutely permissible and false, especially for those who are supposed to work on building the state and institutions.”

He added that “the Judiciary is carrying out a large part of the tasks assigned in more than difficult circumstances and is waiting for the support of all authorities and institutions.”

Fahmy’s statements about corruption in the judiciary led Salim Jreissati, political adviser to President Michel Aoun, to “denounce and condemn the issuance of such a dangerous, irresponsible and reckless accusation by a security minister against the judiciary “.

The Interior Minister had sparked controversy in statements to the media that considered “stereotyping the role of women in society” after calling on Lebanese women to cook during the closure by Corona, in addition to previous emotional statements in which he spoke of “killing two during the civil war ”in a conflict with one of the powerful.
