MENA Observatory – Lebanon

Today, Friday, the Lebanese Parliament will discuss the message that the President of the Republic “Michel Aoun” addressed to the House of Representatives regarding the criminal scrutiny, after the withdrawal of the Alvarez & Marsal company from the investigations at the Central Bank of Lebanon , for not obtaining the necessary documents to begin to implement its mission.

The parliamentarian “Salim Aoun” and a member of the Finance and Budget Committee confirmed in statements that they cannot access the Central Bank numbers, and said: “I am a member of the Finance and Budget Committee, and when we arrived at the Bank of Lebanon, We don’t find anything, we don’t know the profit and loss, and we don’t know if we have foreign currency reserves. How much is reported, as if it were a great secret and therefore we could not carry out the required control. Therefore, the accusations without evidence do not allow us to know the innocent and the perpetrator, and the causes of the financial and monetary collapse to be addressed.

The Lebanese MP warned of the collapse of the Lebanese state structure in case criminal audits are hampered, highlighting its importance in identifying errors and loopholes and correcting them.

The deputy added: “We cannot only talk about accusations and auctions, without the presence of any evidence. The criminal investigation is what gives figures that are indisputable gains and losses.”

In a letter addressed to Parliament three days ago, Lebanese President “Michel Aoun” highlighted the need for criminal scrutiny of the Central Bank numbers, after the withdrawal of the Alvarez & Marsal company from the investigations.
