He said that France is a “country of tolerance” and refuses to discriminate among its citizens on the basis of religion.

French Chancellor Jean-Yves Le Drian affirmed that his country embraces tolerance and that its law stipulates the neutrality of the State and non-discrimination between citizens on the basis of religion.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Le Drian said that his country faces double terrorism, which is represented in activities carried out by terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda on the one hand, and individual terrorist acts on the other. Le Drian said that his country is being subjected to a campaign of “slander, slander, gossip, exploitation and hatred led by heads of some countries and groups, using the influence of social networks and seeking to deceive others that France and Europe reject the Islam”. He criticized the efforts of these countries to control Muslims in France.

Le Drian added that France is not the only one that has denounced hate campaigns and the manipulation of information on social media.

Le Drian urged the institutions that represent Islam in France to improve their organization, allowing a close dialogue with them.

As for foreign funds for religious associations, he said they must be transparent, “to ensure that they do not intend to impose a fundamentalist ideology.”
