South Korean media reported that the country’s Personal Information Protection Committee has fined Facebook $ 6 million for passing information about more than 3 million Koreans to other companies.
South Korea’s Yonhap Agency said the committee responsible for personal information protection policy filed a complaint against Facebook with the investigating agency.
The committee announced its decision to impose a fine on Facebook during the seventh meeting of the Personal Data Protection Committee, which took place on Wednesday.
He said that Facebook violated the country’s personal data protection law by providing personal information to at least 3.3 million local users in the country, out of a total of 18 million during the period from May 2012 to June 2018 to other companies without Your consent.
Personal information shared with other companies included educational background, work experience, place of origin, family, marital status, and other personal information.
The commission noted that Facebook obstructed a commission investigation by submitting false statements or providing incomplete data.
The commission also imposed a separate 66 million won fine on Facebook for storing users’ passwords unencrypted, failing to periodically notify users about the use of their personal information, and providing false information.
On the other hand, Facebook expressed regret at the measures taken by the committee, saying that it had cooperated with the entire investigation and plans to review these measures closely.
