The Hubble Space Telescope monitors a range of rays and shadows that extends from the center of the galaxy millions of light-years away, leading astronomers to believe that they glimpsed the structure of the black hole.
Black holes are the largest monsters in the universe and they quickly consume everything around them. It is characterized by its attractiveness being so strong that not even light can escape it, an extraordinary fact that also makes it invisible to us, and therefore incredibly difficult to study.
However, the experts observed wide shadows and narrow, bright rays spreading from the center of the galaxy IC 5063, as if something massive was getting in the way of the intense light.
Experts believe this could be a black hole at the core of the galaxy casting a shadow over space, and the alignment could reveal a flare of its structure.
Some columns of light penetrate the gaps in the dust ring, creating bright rays similar to the rays of light that can be seen radiating from the sun at sunset.
“We think we have found evidence that there may be dust all over the galaxy, scattering light from the black hole that accumulates in the active core of the galaxy, and that light can illuminate almost the entire galaxy,” said astronomer Peter Maxime of Harvard Smithsonian University.
Since scientists have not seen this phenomenon before, it may take some time to definitively prove that a black hole causes strange shadows and rays. Yet evolution offers a puzzling scientific discovery and a great opportunity for future research, says RT.
