On Sunday, Dutch health authorities announced the slaughter of some 190,000 chickens, after a highly contagious strain of bird flu spread on two poultry farms.
Health workers slaughtered around 100,000 chickens on a poultry farm in the town of Hikendorp, outside Gouda, in parallel with the slaughter of 90,000 chickens in the North Frisian town of Wittmarsum.
The Dutch Ministry of Health said in a statement that in both cases a “highly contagious H5 strain” was suspected.
The ministry added, according to Agence France-Presse, that there are no other poultry farms within a one-kilometer radius of the outbreak. He explained that “the two farms have been sterilized to prevent further spread of the disease.”
Seasonal avian flu has been detected on various farms in the Netherlands since October, with the main fault being migratory birds.
On 23 October, Dutch Agriculture Minister Carola Schotten decided to preventively isolate all commercial poultry farms in the Netherlands, following the discovery of the “H5N8” virus in two swans.
The new measures come as the Netherlands is also battling a second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic.
